Frequently asked questions
Is knob-and-tube wiring a fire hazard in modern homes? +
Yes. Knob-and-tube (pre-1930s) has no ground, limited insulation, and degrades over time. Buried insulation cracks; rats chew it. Insurance companies refuse coverage, and FHA loans won't close on homes with active K&T. We replace it room-by-room or whole-house.
Can I leave old aluminum wiring if it works fine? +
Not safely. Aluminum wiring (1960s–1970s) oxidizes at connections, causing heat and nuisance breaker trips. The VA and FHA flag it. We rewire with modern copper Romex, AFCI/GFCI protection, and updated outlets — your home becomes insurable and marketable.
How long does a whole-house rewire typically take? +
A 2,000 sq ft home with K&T or aluminum: 5–10 working days. We run new wire through walls (minimizing drywall), install new breakers and outlets, test everything, and pull permits/inspection. Costs depend on wall access, but we quote the full scope upfront.
