Frequently asked questions

What's the advantage of a VFD over a simple across-the-line motor starter? +

Across-the-line is simple and cheap but draws massive inrush current, creates mechanical shock, and can't adjust speed. A VFD ramps up smoothly, reduces wear on motors and equipment, and lets you dial in the exact speed. Energy savings: 30–50% for fans and pumps.

How much does a VFD cost compared to a soft starter? +

A soft starter: $500–$1,500. A VFD: $1,000–$3,000. Soft starters reduce inrush but don't adjust speed. VFDs cost more upfront but save 30–50% energy and extend equipment life. For pumps and fans, VFDs usually pay back in 1–3 years.

Do VFDs require special wiring or panel upgrades? +

VFDs should be in their own dedicated cabinet near the motor, separate from main control panel to avoid noise/EMI issues. If your panel is at the other end of the building, we run shielded cabling. We coordinate with your integrator to size input/output terminals.
